Departmen pproval:
C Vol
REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION
Manager Approved:
. - A
Date: 8/1112003
Item No: IX All
Agenda Section.
J
Organizational Business
Item Description; Discussion on Changing the City's Telephone Numbering Plan
Background
The City of Roseville conducts operations in multiple facilities throughout the city. Some of
these facilities include; City Hall, Public works, Slating Center, Fire Stations, Golf Course, etc.
The use of these facilities evolved over an extended period of time, requiring the City to add
communication systems, including telephone numbering plans somewhat independent of each
other. It was necessary to select telephone numbers that were available at the time from the local
plione service provider (Qwest). his a result the City has a dge -podge of number plans across
five different prefixes.
The following numbering plans are currently in effect, all are in the 651 area code:
Facilit
Prefix
City Hall, Public works, Fire Station #1
490
License Center, emergency #'s, various fax #'s
484
Slating Center, Golf Course, Activity Center, Nature Center
415
Various fax #'s
628
Various fax #'s
765
Although funct i ona 1, the presence of multiple prefixes can create confusion with residents and
customers. In addition, the lack of contiguous numbers does not allow for easy -to- remember
identifiers such as; xxx -ROSE, xxx-RVPD,, or x x -R FD.
Discussion Items
Over the past few months, City Staff have been discussion the possibility of instituting a new
telephone numbering p ian that would consolidate all city facilities under one prefix, with
contiguous numbers. Staff believes a consolidated numbering plan would help residents and
customers locate city offices in a more efficient manner. In addition, it opens the possibility of
other govenunental jurisdictions participating in the City's IP Telephony system, thereby
lowering telephone costs to Roseville residents.
In preliminary discussions with Qwest, Staff has learned that the telephone numbering sequence
of ' 651 -792 -7 xx' is currently available with the necessa contiguous numbers. Other pr.6f x
possibilities are available but with less contiguous numbers. Staff will continue to pursue other
options in the next few weeks.
