2.2 Existing Demography & Conditions
The following is Q review of the City's housing demography and its condition
(# units, type, age and value). The information was reviewed by the HRA in
its evaluation of housing goals for the City. The information is provided
from a variety of sources compiled by the City's Community Development
Department. Those sources include the 2000 Census, Ramsey County value
and type records, Excensus and GVA Marquette. The following is n
summary of that compilation of data. Fuld reports and data are included in
the Appendix A.
• There are over 15,200 housing units within the City.
« Single family detached domes make up the majority of these housing
units at 56 %.
• The second largest housing type is apartments and condominiums at
38 %.
• Town homes are also a major housing type -over 5 %.
• Approximately 70 % of all housing units are owner - occupied.
• There are approximately 100 mobile homes most of which are at least
20 years in age.
• The City has a higher percentage (68 %) of homeowners including
single family, tawnhome and condominiums than Ramsey County, but
the statewide home ownership (especially outstate) rate (75 %) and
the Metro area home ownership rate (78 %) remains higher.
• Homeowner vacancy rates are similar to those found in Ramsey County
and the Metro area, with a turnover rate of approximately 3% per
year.
• The number of housing units built prior to 1950 represents 9% of the
entire pausing stock. Many of these units offer affordable housing
opportunities, as well as opportunities to redevelop the larger lots into
several housing sites.
• The housing stock built prior to 1960 is 37% of the total. ,
• In the housing boom years from 1960 to 1970, almost 30% of the
housing units were constructed.
Horsing Plan — 2004 page 4 Roseville HRA
