A.
Agenda Section:
Organizational Business
Item Description; Discussion on Changing the City "s Telephone Numbering Flan
Background
The City of Roseville conducts operations 'in multiple facilities throughout the city. Some of
these facilities include; City Fall, Public works, Skating Center, Fire Stations, Golf Course, etc.
The use of these facilities evolved over an extended period of time, requiring the City to add
communication systems, including telephone numbering plans somewhat independent of each
other. It was necessary to select telephone numbers that were available at the time from the local
phone service provider (west). As a result the City has a hodge -podge of number plans across
five different prefixes.
The following numbering plans are currently in effect, all are in the 651 area code;
F acilit
Prefix
City Hall, Public warps, Fire Station #1
490
License Center, emergency #'s, various fax #'s
484
Skating Center, Golf Course, Activity Center, Nature Center
415
Various fax #'s
628
Various fax #'s
765
Although functional, the presence of multiple prefixes can create confusion with residents and
customers. In addition, the lack of contiguous numbers does not allow for easy-to-remember
identifiers such as; xxx -ROSE, xxx -RVPD, or xxx -R FD.
In preliminary discussions with Qwest, Staff has learned that the telephone numbering sequence
of ; 651- 792 -7xxx' is currently available with the necessary contiguous numbers. Other prefix
piss abilities are available but with less contiguous numbers. Staff will continue to pursue other
options in the next few weeks.
