Gasaway fond Business
Item Description: Mobile Data Computers
Bac1 und: For the past several years, the Fire Marshal and Fire Inspector have been gathering valuable
information about buildings in Roseville. The timely access to the information about these buildings and their
contents will improve firefighter safety. This information includes:
• Type of building construction and special construction concerns
• Description of hazardous processes
Special occupancy concerts (large numbers of occupants or special needs occupants)
Location of:
o Key box
o Alarm panel
o Electrical panel
o Gas main shut -off
o Heating/cooling units
o Exits I
o Hazardous materials storage
GIS and mapping data, including street/building and hydrant locations, topographical data for haz -mat
run -off, suer and water systems grids
Hazardous Materials mitigation information
This information, and the timely access to it, is veal important to firefighter safety and affects the decisions
made by command officers at the scene of a fire. While the mobile data
computers will have the ability to be connected to a computer system, through the radio system (like the police
department's mobile data computers), we would prefer to hold on the purchase of the equipment needed to do
this until the decisions have been made with regard to switching to the goo Nfflz radio system. In the interim,
the data will be loaded in the computer hard -gives and updated periodically by the Fire Marshal. Approval of
this purchase will fund 8 computers to be located in: Engines 11, 2 1, and 31, Squads 1, 2, 900, 930, 940 and
941. The cost of installation is included in the price.
Policy j ective: Firefighter safety is a tap priority for the fire depaTtment. Timely access to valuable pre -plan
information will help improve the safety of firefighters.
Financial: The requested amount, $44,235, is included in the fire department's 2003 operating budget.
Staff Recommendation: Staff recommends the approval of the purchase of the mobile data cornputen to
enhance firefighter safety.
Council Action Requested.: A motion td approve the purchase of mobile data computers for the fire department
at a cost not to exceed $44,235
