Department Approval: Manager Reviewed: Agenda Section: dz�o; Reports & Recommendations Item Description: Senior Discount Program for City Utilities Background: his requested by the City Council, the public Works and Transportation Commission reviewed additional information regarding the Senior Discount Program for City utilities. The Council asked for a recommendation from the Commission as to the future direction or need for this program. addition to the information previously provided t ` . P Y � � the City Council, staff` provided the Commission with a survey of adjacent cities and other metro cities of similar size as to this type of program offered to their citizens. This survey, as well as information previously presented to the Council, is attached. Discussion: After considerable discussion, the Commission voted 511-0 to recommend continuing the senior discount as it is currently offered, as well as offering a similar am ro dose p � to under age 65 who meet Federal Poverty Income Guidelines. Those applicants ants under age 65 PF g would have to reapply or certify annually that they meet the income guidelines for the l� ra am. The p Commission felt this is a good program to assist those on fixed or limited incomes. .The minutes from the Commission meeting relating to this item are attached. Financial Implications: Extending this discount program to those residents who ` ual�fy will impact overall utility rates. we do not have an estimate at this time as to how . rna�'ly utility customers may qualify.
