Grant as part of the Department restructuring. The grant, was to help pay for new officers. We have received conf=ation from the Department of'Justice that we have been awarded $225,000.00, over the next three years, designated to, hire three additional full-time officers. This will bfing th-Tj Department authorized strength to 47. The grant award start date is October 1,, 1997. The Department will be starting a hifing piroicess soon. Minnesota Auto Theft Prevention Program Grant At the May 5, 1997 Council Meeting the Chief of Police was authorized to, apply for, a $21,0651.00 Vehicle Theft Reduction Grant from, the Mm'nesota Vehicle Theft Prevention Program which was 'I created by the 1996 Minnesota Legislature. We have been nofified that we were successful, and have been awarded the full amount req,u,ested,. The money will pay for analysis and overtime costs for investigations of motor vehicle thefts. This is an increasing crime problem in, the Metro Area.
