Date: 4/28/OV, <br />Item: 5. a <br />ir <br />mob%- <br />J <br />Asian Paciric American Heritage MlontT. <br />May 2008 <br />Whereas: The month of May commemorates the first Japanese immigrants to the United States on <br />May 7, 1843, and the transcontinental railroad completion on May 10, 1869 (Golden Spike Day) ; and <br />Whereas: In 1978, President Jimmy Carter signed a Joint Resolution designating the first week of <br />May as Asian Pacific Heritage Week, and in 1990 President George Bush signed a Resolution <br />expanding the holiday to the entire month of May; and <br />Whereas: From the early 1800s to today, Asian and Pacifi c peoples have played a vital role in the <br />development of the United States and have made lasting contributions to American society. <br />Whereas: Asian Pacific Americans have provided leadership, diversity and harmony to the arts, <br />sciences and humanities; and <br />Whereas: Asian Pacific Americans bring a rich cultural heritage representing many languages, <br />ethnicities and religious traditions to our society; and <br />Whereas: Approximately five percent of Roseville residents are of Asian Pacific American <br />descent; and. <br />Whereas: Roseville recognizes Asian Pacific American Heritage Month's 2008 theme of <br />"Leadership, Diversity, Harmony - Gateway to Success; 99 and <br />Whereas: Diversity represents one of our greatest strengths, and we must strive to ensure that all <br />Americans have the opportunity to reach their full potential. By recognizing the accomplishments and <br />contributions of Asian Pacific Americans, Roseville celebrates the importance of inclusion in building <br />a brighter future for all our citizens. <br />Now, Therefore Be It Resolved, that the City Council hereby declare May 2008 to be Asian Pacific <br />American Heritage Month in the City of Roseville, County of Ramsey, State of Minnesota, U.S.A. <br />In Witness Whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the City of Roseville to be <br />affixed this 28th day of April 2008. <br />Mayor Craig D.
