WW A. Q
PRESENT: Stacey Dahlstrom, Colleen Gabor, Rich "Jake" Jacobson (Committee Chair), Dorothy La Brash,
Julie Larson, Rose IMasanz, Sarah McNeal, Nancy Robbins, Jeff Seifriz, Jim Stark, Lonnie Brokke
AISF-11T: Sarah Broldt Lenz, Amy IhIan, Monte Johnson,, Marcy McNeal, James McNeal, Gale Pederson, Rich
Stra=ann (alt.), Bob Willmus, Jill Anfang, Debbie Cash, Jeff Evenson
1. Jim McNeal was to have continued the discussion of his architectural drawing ideas for remodeling the
interpretative building, but he was unable to attend the meeting due, to illness. Sarah McNeal attempted to carry
on in his stead but it proved too difficult without Jim's drawings at the meeting [they are at HANG in Debbie's
office]. Discussion will be continued at the next meeting.
2. Miscellaneous thoughts from throughout the meeting (whin we got a bit off track):
Jim Seifriz pointed out that to increase visibility of the Ibuilding; trees along the path would have to be
removed.
► Nancy piped pup about the need for a much bigger sign at the end of the path — FORHANC is willing to
investigate financing it
Rose is concerned about the number of paid staff at HANG, that it would be futile to go to the effort to
produce a report of recommendations that have no chance of implementation.
Dorothy pointed out the need for a reason for people, both visitors and volunteers, to come to the
nature center — improvements, changes necessary
• Julie mentioned the free-will donation boxes similar to the ones now at Como Zoo. Lonnie explained
that such donation efforts are discouraged at HANG dine to, liability issues, isolation of the HANC
building, and sometimes elderly volunteers at the desk alone.
• Pledge boxes for IHAHC elsewhere in the city?
• Pledge cards people can fill out?
• One of those coins-go-round-and-round-and-down-the-chute things? (Julie)
• heck -off box on utility billls?
0 Dorothy — need for a really big fundraising event. Nancy would prefer first to have a reason for a big
fundraiser, not just raising money for the sake of raising money.
Sarah — new Master Naturalist program, similar to Master Gardener (Rose indicated it seemed to be a
pretty intense program) — connection with HANG sometime?
Stacy — mentioned changing demographics in Roseville schools, need to rethink marketing efforts to
the immigrant populations
Sarah suggested sponsorship schemes for the boardwalk — person would take "ownership" of their
plank, or section of the walkway
3. Jake discussed the two handouts regarding the outcome report and its framework. Report goes to the Parks
and Recreation Commission and to the City Council. Jake will do up a very rough draft of the report based on all
the brainstorming ideas from past meetings.
4. Lonnie took the floor to discuss the financing of Parks and Rec. in general and HANG in particular. One
handout outlines 2,O06 actual figures for income and expenses; the other handout gives examples of the "cost
per recreation occasion metrics 2006." It was clear from both that HANG is one of the more costly facilities to
maintain, based on the amount of money the City contributes per person that would seem to benefit from it.
zi Iiiiiiiii
Sponsorships — competition possible among various entities within Parks and Rec. — need to coordinate efforts
better
2PU
2/28/2008 Page 53
