lls1Spvq+-J� REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION Date.- June 30,, 2008 Item No..- 13.c Department Approval City Manager Approval Item Description.- Appoint Councilmembers to Grant Evaluation and Ranking System 1 BACKGROUND 2 In the 2008 session the Legislature granted authority to metro area counties to form a joint 3 powers board and implement a quarter cent sales tax for transportation purposes in the seven 4 county metro area. Anoka, Dakota, Hennepin, Ramsey and Washington counties entered a J oint 5 powers agreement and levied the tax. The five counties formed the Counties Transit 6 Improvement Board (CTIB) which will distribute the money. The Grant Evaluation and Ranking "7 System Committee (GEARS) rank and evaluate eligible transit projects for submission to the 8 CTIB. 9 GEARS will include eight elected city officials, five county commissioners and the chair of the 1(' -) Met Council Transportation Committee. 11 POLICY OBJECTIVE 12 Having representation on the GEARS Committee would help ensure that Roseville and the 13 surrounding communities receive adequate funding to maintain a transportation system to serve 14 the area's current and future needs. 1 FINANCIAL IMPACTS '17 STAFF RECOMMENDATION 1 Appoint a councilmember to be the City's designated voter to cast the City's vote for 19 representation on the GEARS Committee. Appoint a councilmember to represent Roseville on 20 the GEARS Committee. The designated voter can be the same person running as a candidate for 2 1 the GEARS Committee. 22 REQUESTED COUNCIL ACTION 23 Appoint Councilmember to be the City's designated voter to cast the City's vote for 24 representation on the GEARS Committee. 25 Appoint Councilmember to be nominated for the Grant Evaluation and Ranking 26 System Committee.
