Department Approval <br />IJS�kSPaC+E <br />NEQUEST FOR, COUNCIL ACTION <br />RM 0 We; <br />Acting City Manager Approval <br />Item Description: Fire Department Administrative Assistant Job Description Change <br />1 ACKGROUND <br />2 The 2008 fire department bud authorized the department assistant (administrative assistant) <br />3 position to transition from part-time to full-time. With the planned retirement of the part-time <br />41 department assistant, staff intended to conduct an evaluation of the position to ensure the <br />5 maximum utilization of the position. In December, the position was vacated with the untimely <br />6 death of the department assistant. This delayed the process of evaluating the position. Thus, the <br />7 position has not been filled. Staff has conducted an evaluation of the position is recommending a <br />8 new position description that combines the duties of the department assistant with firefighter. <br />This will provide for an additional trained responder during weekday hours when the <br />1� department's calls for services are highest. <br />1� 2 UP DATE (7/28/08) <br />1� 3 As a follow-up to the may 5/12108 meeting discussion where the Fire Department was seeking <br />i�,i approval of the dual position of fire fi ghter/department assistant, council had directed staff to <br />1� 5 reword the position description to reflect the department assistant responsibilities as primary and <br />1� 6 the fire fighter duties as secondary. Pursuant to the Fire Chief's memo to City Manager dated <br />1� 7 June 12, 2008, Staff is requesting that council reconsider the directive to change the language of <br />i� 8 the job description and consider approving it as originally presented on May 12. <br />21 POLICY OBJECTIVE <br />22 Council must approve significant changes to position descriptions. <br />23 FINANCIAL IMPACTS <br />2,1 The pay grade for department assistant and firefighter are the same (Grade 7) and this will not <br />25 change.
