MEQUEST FOR, COUNCIL ACTION
2 1.0 BACKGROUND:
1.1 Since the adoption of the new sign code, the Planning Division has been challenged in its
interpretation, consideration, and approval of temporary signs. Although there are a few types
5 listed the there is no specificity on type of sign that is permissible and the timeline (usually tied
6 to an event) seems too short of a duration for certain requests.
7
8 1.2 Similarly, the existing Master Sign Plan hearing process has been cumbersome to assign proper
review/approval authority. Currently responsibility is assigned to the Development Review
Committee, a committee with membership from all departments and divisions that are not
necessarily educated in the area of signs and sign requirements.
1 2
1 2.0 EXISTING CODE:
ii ,1, 2. 1 Chapter 1010.03 (PERMITS), subsection 3 a-c (TEMPORARY SIGNS - PERMIT REQUIRED9
1 5 REMOVAL, and SIZE) states the following,:
1 7 a. PERMIT REQUIRED: permits for temporary signs, grand openings signs, special event
1 f signage and other attention getting devices may be issued for searchlights and/or
1 balloons not exceeding 2 feet in the largest dimension, tents, laser light shows, and
2 similar attention getting devices. A temporary sign shall not include a banner.
2 1
22 b. REMOVAL: During any calendar year, temporary signs, grand opening signs, special
23 event signs, and other attention getting devices may be in place no more than 12 days,
241 except institutional uses which shall be allowed for no more than 30 days.
25
26 C. SIZE: The surface area of a temporary sign shall not exceed 75 sq. ft. This area shall be
27 in addition to permanent, window, or other signage allowed elsewhere in this chapter.
28
2 d. LOCATION: A temporary sign shall be located a minimum of 15 feet from a property
line.
Page I of 6
