Department Approval <br />xAw&i4 <br />Rls�kspvlffi� <br />REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION <br />Date: 4114108 <br />Item No.: 7.f <br />City Manager Approval <br />Item Description: Follow -Up on the NSCC Meeting Regarding a Private Fiber Network <br />BACKGROUND <br />On March 3, 2008 the City Council passed a resolution adopting an official City Position on a municipal <br />funded private network. This resolution was passed in advance of a pending meeting that was to take place <br />on March 6, 2008 by the North Suburban Communications Commission (NSCC). The NSCC had <br />established this meeting for the purposes of discussing a report prepared by a consulting firm on the <br />potential for a private fiber network amongst NSCC member cities. <br />At the conclusion of their meeting, the NSCC determined that any future consideration of a private fiber <br />network ought to remain with individual cities rather than the NSCC. Many of the reasons cited were <br />similar to those that the Council had identified in the above - mentioned resolution. <br />City Staff will continue its on -going effort to identify opportunities to construct a private fiber network in <br />Roseville as well as in adjacent cities. we anticipate that a broader discussion on a fiber master plan will <br />be brought to the Council later this year. <br />POLICY OBJECTIVE <br />Not applicable <br />FINANCIAL IMPACTS <br />Not applicable <br />STAFF RECOMMENDATION <br />Not applicable <br />REQUESTED COUNCIL ACTION <br />No Council action is being requested.
