Department Approval
FA
WPWA
Rlskspvlffi
REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION
Date: 0110108
Item No.: 12.g
City Manager Approval
Item description: Consider Additional wells for the Campus wide Geothermal Project
BACKGROUND
On June 9, 20W the City Council authorized an agreement with Harty Mechanical to install a "full"
geothermal system at the Roseville Skating Center Arena. At that meeting and previous meetings, there
have been discussions regarding the preparation for the future campus wide application. Specifically,
this means moving the well field from the initially proposed location of the North parking lot to the
South parking lot, drilling 24 additional wells, providing larger piping and increasing the pump size for
the ground heat exchanger (GHX). You requested that a price be brought back to you for consideration.
The price received is $09,097.91.
The proposed price is higher than anticipated and does not appear to provide a significant financial
advantage of doing this now. Part of the higher price includes a premium for the additional well drilling
due to the drillers schedule issues. Although difficult to predict the future, geothermal is a new venture for
the City and without having significant experience, it may be prudent to hold off, learn more, and
provide the necessary connections to the campus wide system at a later date. Another consideration
would be that the South parking lot pavement does have a longer remaining useful life than the North
parking lot.
If this component is not selected, the well field would remain in the North parking lot and the future tie
in to the other campus wide facilities would occur in alternative fashions.
POLICY OBJECTIVE
The policy objective with this particular project involves consideration of the cost /benefit to implement
sustainable uses for facilities in the city of Roseville as well as long term planning.
FINANCIAL IMPACTS
The total cost for the moving the well field to the South parking lot of the Skating Center and adding 24
wells to the field to be prepared for the future campus expansion is $69,097.91.
STAFF RECOMMENDATION
The decision to add the extra wells is a campus wide policy decision and would have very little impact
on the Skating Center project specific, except for providing added redundancy.
