1 3.2 Continually Review vehicle options
2
3 Background As new alternatives are developed and become viable, choices for
4 replacement vehicle options must be broadened. The current automotive market has
5 several options available, and there are always new technologies emerging. Some of the
0 current options:
7
S * Hybrid vehicles (when available with the required functions and capabilities) are
9 the most environmentally friendly choice available on today's market. Some are
10 more efficient than others. For most hybrids on the market today, the payback
11 period using projected fuel costs makes them attractive.
12 * There is opportunity for improvement with internal - combustion gas and diesel
13 engines. Make it a priority to look for models with better fuel economy; in many
14 cases a more fuel efficient alternative provides a cost benefit over the life of the
15 vehicle.
10 * Entirely electric passenger and utility vehicles are available with several to choose
17 from. They provide a noteworthy improvement but they are limited to low speed
18 and non - highway use. Another drawback is limited distribution and low - volume
19 production currently, so they might be a more expensive option at this time.
20 * other developing vehicle technologies, such as fuel cell, compressed air, and fully
21 electric vehicles for highway use are not yet ready for use with Roseville's current
22 infrastructure.
23
24 It is important to keep in mind that many of the alternative fuel vehicles often do not
25 have safety features that are comparable to the non - alternative options. when
20 choosing a vehicle with energy and money savings options, it is just as important to
27 evaluate the safety impacts and risks.
28
29 Policy /Goal To keep updated on all available vehicle options.
30
31
32 Details /Action As these more efficient and environmentally friendly options
33 become readily available, consideration should be given for city
34 use if they meet functions, safety, budget, and infrastructure
35 requirements.
30
37 Cost/Saving Varies
38
39 Timeline ongoing
40
41 Responsible
42 Staff Fleet Manager and Department Heads
43
44
45
40
47
4S
49
7
