Such ordinance may y pro vide for the sale of such propert, y to the <br />highest bidder at public auction... ". To allow the police department the means to dispose of-- through <br />public auction - -the sale of confiscated, recovered, and found items whose owners could not be <br />identified or located, the City adopted ordinance 549: Sale of Unclaimed Property. <br />The police department has been disposing of unclaimed property from its property room for ten plus <br />years through the use of local -only, public auctioneering firms. Monies earned from these auctions are <br />credited to the City's general fund. while the use of local, public auctioneering firms has proven <br />somewhat beneficial, several local law enforcement agencies are now utilizing Prop ertyRoom. com, <br />Inc., an online public auction company that has consistently auctioned items at a much higher sales rate <br />than local -only auctioneers; therefore, generating more income for the municipality or county. <br />City Code Sesction 505.01: Sales of Unclaimed Property, currently reads, "The Chief ofPollce Is <br />authorked to administer the disposal of property la w1ull, y coming Into the possession of the City and <br />remaining unclaimed by y the owner after sixty y (60) days. Disposal shall be by y sale to the highest ,bidder <br />at public auction or sale. A notice specifying... ". <br />To allow the police department to enter into an agreement (Attachment A) with Prop ertyRoom. com, <br />Inc., thereby anticpating increased revenue for the City's general fund, the police department is <br />requesting that the Council allow the following change to City Code Section 505.01, "The Chief of <br />Police Is authorized to administer the disposal of property y la wfull, y coming Into the possession of the <br />City y and remaining unclaimed by y the owner after sixty y (60) days.
