February 22, 2012
Item 9
Book Club
Proposal: HRC Sponsored Book Club (Programming)
Suggestion: I would ask the Commission to consider the possibility of an HRC
sponsored "Human Rights Book Club, City of Roseville." This group could meet
monthly (or bi-monthly) to discuss a different book each time. The books would be of
wide appeal (non-academic), addressing different perspectives to facilitate community
dialogue around issues of diversity. For example, readings could include memoires, by
immigrants and civil rights activists, and inter-faith studies. The time, location,
and reading selections could be decided upon through the Programming Committee
(with the assistance of any participants as the group develops). I am suggesting this
proposal in order to supplement, and not replace, the community forums.
Rationale: This would seem to be a way to support civic engagement, community
building, and education in the area of human rights.
Motion: The Human Rights Commission will delegate to its Programming Committee
the development of a"Human Rights Book Club, City of Roseville." The Book Club
would be, and would remain, open to all Roseville City residents. The Programming
Committee would schedule readings, meetings, facilitators, and advertisements for the
community.
• Submitted by Kristin Doneen, for consideration by the City of Roseville Human Rights
Commission.
