Honorable Mention
Sam O'Donnell-Hoff
Tth Grade - Parkview Center School
Taught by Lucas Ebert
The Death Penalty
"What says the law? You will not kill. How does it say it? By killing!"
This is a quote from Victor Hugo, author of Les Miserables, about the death penalty. The
mp'tal punishment is a cruel way of sending the message to not kill, and hypocrit"cal ai
V 1 1 -
that. Here in Roseville, Minnesota, we can forget that the rest of the world, and even
I I PROW
Minnesota has outlawed the death penalty, does not mean that you should not care about
4 11 11 11 1 1 111111 III I On
IHT-=111 ! 71 Me- ITMO
J1 I IlCi 2=4 0
right to life, yet 58 countries in the world still use the death penalty. That means that 36 states still disregard human life,
9
with Texas leading the way. Ever since Rick Perry became governor of tile Lone Star
V 'tate, he has had 234 executed. That is a whopping 40% of all executions carried out in
1V
ommilmmw Me
This has proven more humane than the gas chamber, but according to a study done 'in
2005, 21 out of 49 tested after death have had low-enough blood concentrations of
v
,odium thiopental to regain awareness before their death. Sodium Thiopental is the first
%if three injections, and the one that stops the pain by making putting the person in a statts
*f unconsciousness, so they do not detect it. Perry has also executed seven people from
