REPORT OF THE
COMMISSION CHAIR
PREPARED ON
MARCH 14,
20i2
Regarding Commission's
March Meeting Agenda
Items &
Update on Current
Activities
Roseville Human Rights Commissioners:
March 21, 2012
Item 6.i
Chair's Report
HUMAN RIGHTS
COMMISSION
MEETING
OF
FEBRUARY 'LZ,,
2012
Marriage Amendment: After discussing the issue with the Operations Committee
I believe it would be useful for the Commission to discuss the question of
whether and how the Commission responds to the proposed Constitutional
Amendment banning gay marriage. We should discuss this question in a
forthright and public manner.
The Program Planning Committee is considering some educational programs on
this issue (see their committee report for our March 215t meeting) and the
Outreach Committee has met with commissioners from several neighboring
commissions where this issue has come up.
Our neighboring commission in Falcon Heights has passed a resolution opposing
this amendment (see attachment.) The Human Rights Commissions of Duluth,
Edina, Minneapolis, and St Paul have also passed similar resolutions in opposition
to the amendment.
The League of Minnesota Human Rights Commissions has passed a resolution on
this matter, a copy of which is now attached.
Procedures Remain Unchanged: The Operations Committee is considering
whether to revise our adopted procedures (See June 2011 minutes) to limit
committees to no more than three Commissioners as members. So for the time
being, absent action of the Commission rescinding its previous rule, every
committee remains open to each commissioner. I would hope, however, we
could informally keep committees to no more than three commissioner
members.
Reminder: Per our usual practice don't forget to bring with you to our meeting
your schedulers, appointment books, lap tops or whatever you use for
scheduling. We need to use the opportunity to schedule future meetings.
Respectfully submitted,
Gary Grefenberg, Chair
Human Rights Commission
