<br />10. Would you recommend a career in EMS to others, to your children? <br />This career is not for everyone. If you enjoy helping others in non-emergency and emergency <br />situations, can work well under life and death pressures and want to drive around in your office <br />then look at an EMS career. <br /> <br />11. What is the most rewarding part of being a paramedic? <br />Being able to turn chaos into order. Most paramedics are take charge problem solvers and feel <br />rewarded when we can make a difference for someone in crisis. <br /> <br />12. What do you do when you're not treating or transporting patients? <br />We may be sitting in our ambulance on a street comer waiting for the next call or if we are quiet <br />throughout the area we are sitting at a base. We are then able to read, watch a little TV, catch up <br />on continuing education, etc. We work two 12 hour and one 16 hour shift a week. <br /> <br />MYTHS <br />Myth-You're the ambulance driver. <br />Fact- Yes, I do drive an ambulance but I take turns with my partners. When I'm not driving I'm <br />evaluating and treating sick or injured patients in the back of the ambulance. <br /> <br />Myth- We are always going to life or death calls. <br />Fact-We are able to treat most patients and stabilize them before transport to the hospital. Most <br />of our patients require routine transport to the hospital, no lights and siren. <br /> <br />Myth-All we see is blood and gore. <br />Fact-We respond to far more medical calls for sick persons at their homes, clinics or work places <br />than twisted metal car crashes. <br /> <br />Myth- We are part of the fire department. <br />Fact- Allina Medical Transportation is one of the region's largest ambulance and medical <br />transport services, meeting the EMS and special medical transport needs of 75 Minnesota <br />communities in Anoka, part of Carver, Dakota, Hennepin, Isanti, Ramsey, Rice, Scott, <br />Sherburne and Wright counties. Police and/or <br />fire departments may make first contact but the paramedic is the one who evaluates, <br />treats and transports to the hospital. <br />
