City Council Regular Meeting - 03/13/06
Minutes - Page 17

12.a

Council Direction regarding the Form and Content for
Community Notification for the Town Hall Meetings
City Manager Beets requested Council directive as to the
extent and format for noticing the upcoming meetings,
with options and potential direct costs (excluding direct or
indirect staff time costs) for specific notice and media
options.

Discussion included Council preference for a general
statement for the invitation (i.e., inviting citizens to share
their priorities with the City Council for budget and
priority issues); and preference for a separate press release
focusing on the Town Hall meeting.

City Manager Beets outlined staff s intent to include an
article in the "News Fax" as a press release and dedicated
to the Town Hall forums; link on the City's website;
screen notice on Channel 16; posting at City Hall;
announcements at public meetings; advertisement for the
May Town Hall meeting in the City News newsletter; and
printing flyers for distribution by neighborhood block
watch captains.

Councilmember Pust opined that flyers sent to school
students were not useful, as parents were inundated with
backpack materials. Councilmember Pust encouraged
each Councilmember to take on the responsibility, through
flyers or verbal communication, with other organizations
and agencies they were involved with, to spread the word.

Public Comment
John Kysylyczyn, 3083 N Victoria Street
Mr. Kysylyczyn noted the his estimated cost of $50 per
person for past Town Hall meetings, and opined that even
with extensive advertising in the past, it still produced
poor results.

After discussion, City Manager Beets was directed to use
the following methods for public notice, as outlined in the
Staff Report dated March 13, 2006 and entitled,

Form and Content
for Community
Notification for the
Town Hall
Meetings
