<br />Special City Council Minutes - 12/04/03 <br />Page 7 <br /> <br />Roseville for firefighters; ten minute response time <br />requirements to ensure that equipment and personnel are <br />available at the call site; recruitment efforts and publicity, <br />including signs at station, local newspaper advertisements, <br />website, public access, word-of-mouth, department <br />visibility at 110 community events (i.e., block parties, <br />parades, park events), and introductory meetings with <br />individuals expressing interest in becoming a firefighter <br />held at the fire stations twice a month. <br /> <br />Fire Department personnel advised that they already had a <br />brochure that was distributed as various events and <br />facilities, including libraries. <br /> <br />Further discussion included the effectiveness of current <br />advertising methods; the biggest detriment or challenge to <br />recruitment being the time commitment required; <br />competition with other are departments in recruiting <br />within the response area; and the minimum age <br />requirement of 18 years old, in addition to the Explorer <br />Program. <br /> <br />Assistant Fire Chief 0 'Neill noted that when testing is <br />done several times each year, there are always adequate <br />numbers of applicants; but with the training and time <br />commitments, beginning firefighters often drop out of the <br />training program. <br /> <br />Lea2ue Position #4: <br />"If all else fails, the L WV supports hiring full-time <br />firefighters for daytime shifts." <br />No comments. <br /> <br />Lea2ue Position #5: <br />"The LWV supports the current arrangement of the <br />Police Department as the first responder for fire calls <br />and emergency medical services." <br />Discussion included the availability of the Police <br />Department on the streets and better able to respond to <br />emergencies more quickly; how recruitment of Police <br />Officers would take them from their duties to the Police <br />
