Over the past several months we have been hard at work
communicating with cities, chaznbers of commerce, community groups, business associations and others about why
public collection is bad policy. Understanding the counties' concem regarding the financial well-being of the Newport
facility, the waste haulers have guaranteecl waste voiume to ensure the Newport waste facility meets its financial
obligations. Regardless, the counties appear poised to move forward with their proposal.
There is little public support for changitig the waste hauling systcm. Recently, Vasko's Rubbish Removal, Walter's
Recycling and Refuse, Superior Services, BFI and Waste Management mailed letters and a reply card to their customers
in Washing#on and Ramsey Counties. Nearly 14,000 local households and businesses returned cards affirming their
opposition to governmett-managed/public collection. Of the eards returned, 2,537 were from households and businesses
in the city of Roseville.
We have also received resolutions opposing the counties' proposal from the following:
• Woodbury Chamber of Cobnmerce • Sait Paul Chamber of Commerce
• Forest Lake CReamber of Comerce Minesota Chambet- of Comffierce
• Sain aul Buidang Owners nd IViaaage-s
Associaio (BOMA}
AII of the cards and resolutions ltave been submitted to the cnunties for inclusion as public comment opposed to public
collection. In addition, county commissioners have received bundreds of calls and letters fram consfitucnts opposed to
the propasal_
It is anticipated that at an April 25, 2002 joint workshop commissioners &om hoth counties vill deczde whether public
collection should te fiu-ther pursued. However, the specific logistics of this meeting are s#ill being worked oui.
Thank you fo e opportunity to saare this information witl you.
