C) CENTER CITY PROJECT <br />BACKGROUND: The Committee recognizes the importance of the Ci#y Center concept <br />and supports the centralization of City facilities. Further the Committee beiieves the <br />new community center should be built in a central location. <br />5) City wide Beautification <br />A} ARB�RETUM <br />BACKGROUIVD: The Cen#ral Park Arboretum was conceived as an ongoing coritinuafly <br />changing pro�ect. The area would be divided into landscaped-sections with est�bfsshed <br />trees and shrubs, a nursery providing trees for other City sites, and demonstration <br />gardens ail in#erconnected by walkway�. The City Counci! approvsd the concept of the <br />Arboretum and the general plan for implemer�tation. Ground breaking ceremonies for <br />the Centrat Park Arboretum took place in spring o# 1997_ <br />REC4MMENDATI4N: Funding for Arboretum development should be primarily <br />from donations� but seed money should ae provided by the City to expedite the <br />initial s#ages of development. <br />B) TREE PLAN <br />BACKGROUND: The Tree Task Force was formed in �989 and presented a fina! <br />city-wid� planting recommendation for boulevard trees in 1995. Its recommendation <br />was adopted by th� C�ty counc�� in 1995. The Tree Task Force revas involved_ in a tree <br />census, afso a part of its final repor#. <br />RECOMMENDATION: The Committee recomrr�ends swift imp�ementation of the <br />iree Task Force report for boulevard planting�. <br />C) PARK BEAUTIFICATI�N <br />BACFCGR�UND: Well designed and properly maintained plantings of trees, �hrubs, <br />flowers and omamentai 5�asses will enhance the aesthetics af City parks and buildirgs. <br />The use of native species will reduce mairrtenance costs and set an example for the <br />community of environmentaliy responsible landscaping. <br />RECDMINENDAT101V: l4 landscap�ng plan shou�d tae developed wh�ch rnaximizes <br />plantang of trees, shrubs and plants in patics and surrounding C4ty buildirrgs. <br />Emphasis shoufd be on the use of r�ativ� species of both plants and tree�. <br />6) Linkages <br />A) RECREATiONAL CORgilDORS <br />BACKGROUND: Recreational corridors would provide a system linking the City, both <br />aestheticaliy and physicalfy, and v�rould give #he City a tool for overall, sys#emic <br />planning of these yarious corridors.
