City Manager Malinen <br />52 said he would check to see if that was allowed. <br />53 <br />54 Forum on Race/Diversity Training <br />55 Commissioner Venters updated the HRC on his contacts with the Grand Rapids group. <br />56 <br />57 City IVlanager Malinen reviewed his research on on-line diversity training opportunities for City <br />S8 staff based on his review of various modules, past experience and use of the modules, and in <br />59 consideration of staff time and the cost-effectiveness of training. <br />60 <br />61 Discussion included length of training; POST Board certification for Police Officers as part of <br />62 their continuing education requirements; rationale for the Grand Rapids two days training; <br />63 previous training by the HRC; consideration for specialized peer training for the Police and how <br />64 to involve the cornmunity in such an opportunity. <br />65 <br />66 Discussion included the importance of group dynamics to determine whether training would be <br />67 beneficial; intent of training, whether specific to the Police Department frorn a positive <br />68 perspective or from a perccived need; support from Police Chicf Carol Sletner based on the <br />�9 department's overall training requirements, shifts, and budget considerations; and the need for <br />!0 cultural awareness and sensitivity for the entire organization. <br />71 <br />72 Discussion included accommodation of shifts for City employees, specifically Police Officers; <br />73 corntzlunity involvement through a forum; advantages of personal interaction versus online <br />74 ira.ining opportunities; assistance from other agencies and the Attorney General's Office; and <br />75 possible vendor participation. <br />76 <br />77 Chair Delmore volunteered to contact Chaska Police on their experiences with diversity training. <br />78 <br />79 Commissioner Venters noted other considerations to be incorporated and volunteered to continue <br />SO discussions with Police Chief Sletner, in an attempt to build the trust between the HRC and <br />81 Police Department and agreed to vciork with City Manager Mafinen, as applicable. <br />82 <br />$3 Commissioner McKenzie reiterated her interest in seeing the Police Officer training involve <br />84 group interaction with iheir peers and community to provide a better dynamic, due to the nature <br />85 of the Officer's job in confronting people in sometimes unpleasant circumstances. <br />.� <br />. <br />.. <br />.. <br />:` <br />.� <br />Cornrnissroner Oftelie sought a more thorough review of the Grand Rapids training curricu�urn. <br />Commissroner Venters volunteered to forward packet matcnals to indtvidual Commissioners as <br />well as City Manager Malinen. <br />
