Roseville Human Rights Commission <br />Meeting Minutes — August 12, 2U08 <br />Page 2 of 4 <br />1 Commissioner McKenzie said the United Way representatives would docutxxent the pilot <br />2 program to provide feedback and as a planning tool for future forums. <br />3 <br />4 Commissioners McKenzie and Oftelie noted the interest of Barb Ball representing J. C. Penney, <br />5 and her suggestion to keep thc discussion alive by providing a plant bulb for each participant to <br />6 take with them and �lant as a way io "bloom where you're planted" or "bloom where you live." <br />7 <br />S <br />9 <br />10 <br />11 <br />12 <br />Discussion included types of bulbs that would be appropriate, volunteer donation of bnlbs by <br />individual commissioners, greenhouses located in Roseville and recommendation for daffodils. <br />Commissioners Oftelie and McGehee volunteered to pursue the bulb idea. <br />13 Commissioner McKenzie said that each participant would be asked to address an envelope to <br />14 themselves at the end of the village portion of the forum and the United Way represcntatives <br />15 would mail to each participant after one month to remind participants of their commitment. <br />16 <br />17 Welcoming Center <br />18 Commissioner Ofteli.e reported on her discussions with the Director of the City of Austin's <br />19 Welcome Center; noted their updated website; whether to pursue Councilmember Pust's <br />20 suggestion for having a virival welcome center on the City's website; suggestions for individual <br />21 commissioner review of the G1obalPittsburgh.org, and their ideniification of "regional <br />22 communities of various cultures" that were featured on their website, including the cultural <br />?3 <br />L4 <br />25 <br />26 <br />27 <br />28 <br />history in the region; and potential funding sources to develop a prolotype to provide helpful <br />information to newcomers to Roseville. <br />Commissioner McKenzie noted thal the City's Communications Specialist Tim Pratt was adept <br />at putting those types of materials together. <br />29 Discussion included Foundations that could fund such an undertaking; review of more regional <br />30 websites (i.e., Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, and the State of MN}; and how to incorporate <br />31 the vu-hial welcome center into ihe City's existin.g website, initial preparation and ongoin.g <br />32 maintenance of up-to-date materials. <br />33 <br />34 City Manager Malinen said the City's website had a template to put togelher pages, including <br />35 hosting and security considerations and confirmed that Tim Pratt was the contact person. <br />36 <br />37 Furiher discussion was held on questions for participants at the forum that would provide <br />38 additional cultural and demographic information which could be used to develop the virtual <br />39 welcome center based on ethnicities and their information needs. <br />4Q <br />41 <br />42 <br />43 <br />44 <br />45 <br />�6 <br />Commissioner Oftelie said she would continue reviewing local websites and report at the ncxt <br />meeting. <br />A bench handout, the City of Shoreview HRC's example entitled "Dialogue Villages, was <br />distributed <br />
