Human Rights Commission <br />Meeting Minutes, December 1Q, 2002 <br />Present: Chair Theltna McKenzie, Mark Chapin, Phillip Crump, Martha Hardesty, Steve Smith, <br />PaEty Tschida, Karen Vnuk, Howard Wagner <br />Absent: Larry Voeller and Steve Zorn <br />Staff: Carolyn Curti <br />The meeting was called to order by Chair Thelma McKer�zie at 7;10 p.m. <br />Approve Minutes <br />Mark Chapin moved to accept the minutes of November 12. Howard Wagner seconded the <br />motion. Minutes of the previous r�leeting were approved. <br />Human Rights Day <br />Howard Wagner and Thelma McKenzie briefed members an the 19`h annual Human Rights Day <br />that they attended along with Steve Smith and Carolyn Curti. Four hundred people were <br />registered io atkend the statewide conference. State Senator Mee Moua spoke ai ihe Plenary <br />Session, and Juan Carlos Benitez was the Keynote Speaker. Moua is the first Hmong person <br />elected ta any s�ate office in the nation. Benitez is the highest ranking Hispanic Presidential <br />appointee in the Departmenl of Justice. <br />St. Paul Foundation Grant <br />The Commission did not receive the St. Paul Foundation Grant. Mark Chapin requested a list of <br />who won and what types of projects were funded. Carolyn Curti will get the list and distribute to <br />Commissioners. <br />Commission members discussed purstting other grant opportuniiies. <br />Youth Commissian Member Representative <br />Youth Human Rights Commissioner Hannah Nepresh resigned from the Commission because of <br />other tirr►e commitments. Commissioners discussed ways to recruit a new youth member. A <br />good option would be to work with Johanna Eager, Diversity Coordinator for the Roseville Area <br />Schools. The City Council must approve the search for a new youth Commissioner. Once the <br />City Council approves, staff with begin recruiting a new Youth member. The City Council will <br />discuss the issue at the January 6 Council meeting. <br />New Commission Member <br />New Commission Member Patty Tschida introduced herself. <br />
