Essay Contest <br />T'helma McKenzie reported about the essay cantest presentation at the February 24 City Council <br />meeting. All of the students and families, both principals and most of the teachers attended the <br />meeting and the reception that followed. Four of the students r�ad their essays. Thelma thanked <br />Larry Voeller for helping with the award presentation. <br />Roseville Area Schools Comprehensive Diversity PIan <br />All Comr�ission members received a copy of the RAS Diversity Plan which lohanna Eager <br />talked about at the October 2002 meeting. Johanna requesfed that the Commission review and <br />make comments on the content. <br />Miscellaneous <br />Thelma McKenzie was recently invited to attend the Forest Lake Human Rights Commission <br />meeting. They are a new Comrnission and are looking for assistance to get started. They hope to <br />get students in their area to participate in the essay contest in the fut�re. <br />The Commission agreed to participate in the 2003 Rose Parade an June 23. We will request a <br />convertible for the parade. Commissioners are encouraged to participate. Caralyn will complete <br />the application form and will invite the Essay contest winners ta ride along. We will also <br />purchasc candy that will be distributed along the parade route. <br />Thelma informed the Cornmission that Steve Smith and Phil Crump's terms expire March 31, <br />but both Cornmissioners reapplied to serve an additional term. The City Council is expected to <br />make a decision soon. <br />Mark Chapin requested that at the upcoming meeting, the Commission review its purpose and <br />objectives as a way to stay focused on the Commission's ck�arge. <br />Commissioners raised the issue of proposed legislation to remove sexual orientation from being <br />a protected class in Minnesota. Commissioners debated whether to write a letter or contact the <br />Roseville legislative delegation directly. Members felt they did not have all of the facts <br />surrounding the proposed legislation. Mark Chapin will provide Commissioners with additional <br />information and propose a letter that the Commission or individual members could send. <br />Phil Crump moved and Karen Vnuk seconded that the meeting adjoum. Meeting adjoumed at <br />9:10 p.m. <br />
