Human Rights Commission <br />Meeting Minutes, January 14, 20�3 <br />Present: Chair Thelma McKenzie, Mark Chapin, Phillip Crump, Martha Tiardesty, Karen Vnuk, <br />Larry Voeller, Howard Wagner, Steve Zorn <br />Absent: Steve SmiEh, Patty Tschida <br />Staff: Carolyn Curti <br />The mecting was called to order by Chair Thelma McKenzie at 7:05 p.m. <br />Approve Minutes <br />Steve Zorn rttoved to accept the minUtes of Decernber 10, 2Q02. Karen Vnuk seconded the <br />motian. Minutes of the previous meeting werc approved. <br />Chair Thelma McKenzie introduced Mayor John Kysylyczyn. <br />Mayor Kysylyczyn requested that the Cornmission assist the City in two matters. 1) Advise the <br />City Council on ways to recruit a more diverse pool of applicants to serve on Commissions and <br />task forces. 2} Advise the City Council on appropriate meeting roorn policies for City buildirzgs. <br />Commission members briefly discussed the issues with Mayor Kysylyczyn. After his <br />presentation, Mayor Kysylyczyn lcft the meeting. <br />Martin Luther King Day Activities <br />The Commission purchased 19 posters to be distribuied to public and private schools in the <br />Roseville Area School Distr�ict. Several Commissioners took pasters to distribute by 3anuary 15. <br />Phil Crump contacted Hollywood Video to see whether lhey would display videos to <br />commemorate Martin Luther King. He was not successful in talking with the person who can <br />make this happen. <br />Thelma McKenzie asked Commissioners for other ideas. Commissioners suggested approaching <br />the Library about displaying books. Howard Wagner will work with Phil on this issuc. <br />Youth Commission Recruitment Efforts <br />Carolyn Curti explained that she distributed flyers seeking a Youth Commission member to thc <br />Iocal schools and to locations where youths meet. She sent information ta the media, and <br />information is posted on the City webpage and in City Hall. <br />Based on Mayor Kysylyczyn's request, Thelma McKenzic asked Commissioncrs £or suggestions <br />to recruit people to apply for Comrnissions and Task Forces. Cor�Emissioners suggested ihe <br />following: contact former members of Cornmissions, contact parents of past Essay Contest <br />winners, contact elected officials including Mindy Greiling, John Marty and Carl Jacobson and <br />contact local churches and businesses. Commissioners will also tal.% with neighbors and friends. <br />Karen Vnuk suggested tha# the Commission create a resource �ist. <br />
