The Roseville String Enserrble will perform a
newly commissioned work by composer Cung Tien as part of our spring concert at 3 p.m
at Advent Lutheran Cht3rch, 30Q0 N. Hamline Ave., Roseville.
Mr. Cung lives in Roseville, but he is widely known in the Vietnamese arts
community throughout the Unifed States. Last fall, a concert entirely devoted to his work
was performed in Houston, Texas, vvith Vietnamese singers, pianists and canductors from
across the nation.
Mr. Citng has been an artist-in-residence with the Schubert Club and has been
active in the American Composers Forurn. In lais 9-to-5 career, he is an esteemed
economist for the Minnesota Department of Economic Security.
The piece he has written for us, "Sillcen Willow," is based on a folk song from
traditional Vietnamese cheo theater. We'll be performing it with a harpist and a soprano
solaist, Bich Lien, who will be taking time off from her work as a physician in California
to sing with us.
In conjunction with the concert, the Roseville String Ensemble and the Roseville
Area Arts Council will partner witfi the Twin Cities Vietnamese community and the
Schubert Club to present a display of Vietnamese art and cuiture at Advent Lutheran
Church during the concert. We'll also have a reception with refreshments, including some
Vietnamese treats, after the performance.
We eect many members of the Twin Cities Vietnamese community to attend,
and we think it will be a great opportunity for Roseviile area residents to learn a little
about Vietnam and its traditions. By the way, the performance wili be taped by CTV-15
for rebroadcast on community access cable.
The remainder of the concert program will be a very lively collection of works
based on traditional song and dance from around tie world. Our guest conductor is Mary
Sorlie, director of the Chamber Orchestra at Northwestern College and a conductor for
the Greater Twin Cities Youth Symphonies. i hope we can meet you on Apri127
Sincerely,
L.'_
Linda Owen
President, Roseville String ;nsembe
