� '° �r,� 1 � � i� Human Rights Commission Meeting M�nutes, Qctober 14, 2003 Present: Thelma McKenzie, Chair, Phi�lip Crump, Jacqueline LeMay, Karen Vnuk, Larry Voeller, Howard Wagner, Steve Zorn Absent: Mark Chapin, Steve Snnith Staff: Carolyn Curti Larry Voeller called the meeting to order at 7:10 p.m. in the �ireside Room at the Roseville Skating Center. Approve Minutes Karen Vnuk moved approval of the minutes and Howard Wagner secondcd. The minutes were approved unanimonsly. $elect Human Rights Commission Chair and Vice-Chair Commissioners discussed the responsibilities of the Chair and Vice-Chair. Thc Commission has not selected a Vice-Chair in the recent past. Comrnissioners discussed interest in the twa positions. Larry Voeller nominated The�na McKenzie for the Chair position. Steve Zorn expressed interest in serving as Vice-Chair; however, since two comrnissioners were not at the meeting, he wanted to hear whether they were interested. Thelrna McKenzie arrived and took over Chair responsibilities for the meeting. Commissioners decided to wait until the Novernber meeting to vote on the Chair ar�d Vice-Chair positions. Speakers Bureav Letters to Businesses The letter ta invite individuals and groups involved with human rights to join a speakers bureau is ready_ Phillip Crump ageed to review the list of organizations on the Miz�nesota De�artment of H�man Rights webpage and identify who to invite to participate in the Speakers Bureau. In add�tion to this, Commissioners are encouraged to send names to Carolyri Curti before the end of Qctober. Superintendent Meeting In mid-September Phil Crump, Thclma McKenzie and Mark Chapin rnet with Dr. John Thein, Superinfendent of Roseville Area Schools (RAS), to discuss human nghts issues in the school district. Thein presented demographic information az�d talked about ihe shifl in the ethnic make up o# students in the schoals. They discussed what irnpact this may have on the schooI district budget including hiring teachers or translators wha speak ot�er language. He is also interested in conflict resolution.
