� _��� � � <br />������� <br />HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSI�N M�IUTES <br />TUESDAY, AUGUST 13, 2002 <br />Call to Qrder <br />Chair Thelma McKenzie called the rneeting to order at 7:00 p.m. <br />Roll Call <br />Present: Mark Chapin, Phiiip Crump, Martha Hardesty, Thelma McKenzi�, Hannah <br />Neprash, Stephen Smith, Larry Voeller, Howard Wagner, Staf#' Liaison Carotyn Curti <br />Excused Absence: Rita Stanoch, Stephen Zorn <br />St. Paul Founc�ation <br />Larry Voeller described meeting that he, Mark Chapin and Carolyn Curti had with <br />3ohanna Eager, Diversity Coordinator for Roseville Area Schools (RAS). They discussed <br />possible ways for the Commission and RAS to work together. Her focus will initially be <br />on recruiting and retaining a diverse teaching staff. She said the District has about 20% <br />students of cofor and only 2% teachers of color. Eager invited Commission membcrs ta <br />attend the District's in-service on August 27. Tim Wise is the keynote speaker. <br />Eager also talked about meeting with Marion Helland, a retired teacher who is actively <br />involved in Human Rights issues with schools. The Commission will invite Marion to <br />an upcoming meeting. <br />Eager said she would be happy to partner with the Commission in pursuing the St. Paul <br />Foundation gtant. She has a couple schools in mind that would work well with the <br />prograrn. <br />Martha Hardesty moved and Mark Chapin seconded that the Commission go to the City <br />Council to seek approval to pursue the St. Paul Foutadation Grant. Motion passed. <br />The City Council will vote on the issue on August 19. If they approve, Chapin, Voeller <br />and Curti will draft the grant language and bring to the September meeting. The grant <br />deadline is September 20. <br />Strate;�ic Planning <br />Prior to the meeting several Comznission members sent their priorities for the npcoming <br />year. 4thers added their ideas. Members were in agreetnent that we pursue the St. Paul <br />
