This area went fron� 78.1 % to 90.9% participation az�d 62.9% to 78.2% set out rate. <br />They went from sixth to secand highest in participation and from sixth to third highest in set out rate. <br />Participanis in this are were given two 22- <br />gallon blue bins fhat had been retrofitted <br />with wheels. The wheels are from a <br />standard wheel kit sold by many recycling <br />bin vendors. Participants were told that <br />rnany people like to use two bins so they <br />can have one bin for paper products and <br />one for bottles and cans. This method <br />tested the convenience of additional bin <br />storage capacity and wheeled containers. <br />These residents remained on the every <br />other week collection cycle. Residenis <br />were not restricted to using just the two <br />blue bins and some participants used their <br />existing recycling containers to <br />suppletnenf the two bins. <br />When asked in the pre-survey what would <br />motivate them to recycle more the top <br />response was a financial rebate listed by <br />37.$% of respondents. <br />Residents had the lowest participation and <br />set out rates in the "before" period. But <br />Participants increased the amownt of recycling put out for collection per person. The mean pounds per <br />household callected went from 20.03 in the "hefore" per�od to 26.87 in the "during" period. <br />Sixty-nine percent af residents said they preferred the two bin syst�m. Respondents were not asked if they <br />would be willing to pay moze because under the current program they can get tl�e iwo bins with wheels <br />without an additionai charge. <br />In the post-survey G2.6% of respondenis said they liked the bins because they were easy to move and 61.2% <br />of z'espondents said they Iiked the convenience of using one bin for paper and one bin for bottles and cans. <br />On dislikes 1 S% of respondents said they did.n't like the bins because they didn't have room in their garage <br />to store them. <br />Participants rated environtxzental benefit as the most important component in a recyclang systezn with an <br />average score of 1.9. <br />31 <br />
