REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION
Date: August 13, 2012
Item No.: 10.b
Department Approval City Manager Approval
Item Description: Human Right Commission Meeting with the City Council
B
ACKGROUND
1
Each year, the Human Rights Commission meets with the City Council to review activities and
2
accomplishments and to discuss the upcoming year’s work plan and issues that may be
3
considered.
4
5
A:
CTIVITIES
6
Civic Engagement Task Force
o
7
Project 515 Forum last fall to discuss the 515 state laws and regulations which
o
8
discriminate against gay & lesbian families.
9
Took a Public Position Against the Marriage Amendment in a public and transparent
o
10
manner involving Roseville residents
11
Co-sponsored two forums on Elder Abuse.
o
12
Organized 2012 Student Essay Contest and Reception
o
13
Youth Commissioners were more involved—and productive-- in our activities this past
o
14
year; developed a Facebook page
15
Enacted Commission Rules and Procedures and are near finalizing By-Laws as required
o
16
by City Code
17
Developed Parameters or Guidelines for future programming and criteria for
o
18
cosponsoring programs of other groups
.
19
Formed a working group (Collaborating Commissions Project) with four other north
o
20
Ramsey County suburbs to share resources and assist each other in our human rights
21
activities.
22
23
A:
CCOMPLISHMENTS
24
We’re more organized with an active committee structure and active participation of
o
25
commissioners outside of the monthly meetings.
26
We’ve developed more of an esprit-de-corps as a group, recognizing our individual
o
27
strengths and limitations and working collaboratively..
28
We’re focused on issues which affect the diverse Roseville Community and therefore the
o
29
Commission appears more relevant to more Roseville residents
30
We are doing more of our own press relations, publicity, and outreach.
o
31
Our programs are less ‘show & tell’ and more participant involvement, and we are
o
32
actively involving Roseville residents in program planning and execution.
33
And hopefully we’ve raised the awareness of human rights issues a notch among the
o
34
Roseville community.
35
36
