These regulations may include vapor foss requirements, seal condition,
feakage, proper diking, and repair procedures. Knowledge of such regulations is
necessary to insure compliance with schedufing and inspection requirements.
External inspections are delineated in two subparts: Routine In-Service Inspections and
Schedufed Inspections. Routine tnspections may be performed by owner/operator
personnel and shall noi exeeed one month. Scheduled Inspections are to be
performed by a qualiied inspector at least every five years, or at the quarter corrosion
rate of the shell.
Internal (tank} inspections are required primarily to:
Ensure that the bottom is not severeiy corroded and leaking.
Gather the data necessary, for the minimum bottom and shell thickness
assessments detaifed in Section 2_ As applicable, this data shall also
take into acount external ultrasonic ihickness measurements made
during in-service inspections.
Identify and evaEuate any tank bottom settfement.
lntervals for internal tank inspections are to be determined by the corrosion rates
measured during previous inspections or based on experience with similar in service
tanks. In no case shall the intemal inspection interval exceed 20 years. Alternative
Inspection Intervals are also permitted.
Inspection checklists are detailed in the Appendix. The standard requires that the
owner/operator maintain a complete record file for three types of records covering
constructian, inspection history, and repair/alteration history. Records may not exist for
older tanks_
Applicabfe Fire Codes
Prior to 1989, the National Fire Protection Association Code 30 for Flammab{e and
Combustible Liquids was in efiect for the design, construction and installation of
5-3
