The terrain here varies from gently rollin� to a somewhat steep <br />north-facing hillside in the southeast portzon of the community. Soils vary from dry sand in the <br />southeast portion to a richer sandy loam elsewhere <br />Flowers and grass�s present here tend to be those that tolerate disturbance_ Based on aerial <br />photos from thc 1940's and 1950's, as well as clues in the current ptant community composition, <br />it appears that this prairie has a history of moderate to intense long-term grazin�. After release <br />from grazing and in the absence of fire, the prairie was coloni?ed by fast growing shrubs and <br />smal� trees. The majority of the brush and trees are concentrated in the lower portions of the <br />prairie where the soils hold more moistt�re.
