This iormerly
open area was likely a pasture with widely scattered bur and pin oak in the first half of the
1900's. It is now a nearly closed forest cornposed of trees typical of lavland areas that are
capable of establishing quickly. The most cornmon of these include c}uaking aspen, cottonwood,
boxelder and Arnerican elrn. Most of these pioneer trees average betwcen 10 and 1$ inches in
diameter. The pin and bur oaks that remain here are concentrated on the higher elevations near
the south end. Most of these oaks have open-grown form and exceed 24 inches in diameter.
The shrub layer varies from moderately thick to nearly impenetrable in some places. It is largely
dominated by nonnatives. "1'hese include European and lossy buckihorn, Tartarian honeysuckle,
and only rarely white mulberry.
