Lowland hardwood forests occur on mineral soils and are often Iocated
near the margins of lakes and wetlands, in ravines, and on he lower portions of north-facing
slopes.
Common tree species include, green ash, American elm, eastern cottonwood, basswood, hur oak
and hackberry. Subcanopy trees may include ironwood, red elm and boxelder. Cominon shrubs
include pagoda dogwood, prickly ash, hazelnnt, and gray dogwood. The ground layer may
include Virginia creeper, goIdenglow, Virginia and Canada wildrye, sedges, woodand horsetail,
rough hedae nettle and jack-in-the-pulpit. A wide range of comtnon forest animals and birds use
thcse forests as habitats. These forests are often degraded by overgrazing and/or logged using
unsustainable methods.
Many Lowland Hardwood Forests have been invaded by exotic species such as buckthorn and
reed canary rass. Also, in recent times the trees and other sgecies typical of iowland hardwood
forest have been successful in colonizing upland forests and open areas that they would not have
historically occurred in. This is largely a result of the lack of periodic fire, grazin, haying, or
mowing in these areas.
WETLAZVn COUTIES
(As described in Wetland Planls and Plant Commrinities of Minnesota & Wisconsin, Second Ed'etion — Steve D.
Eggers & Donald M. Herbaceous emergcnt, floating, floating-leaved,
and submerent vegetation cornpose this community, with major dominance by cattaits, hard-
stem bulrush, pickerel weed, giant bur-recd, phragmites, wild rice, pond weeds, and/or water
lilies.
Shallow Marshes — Shallow marsh plant communities have soils that are saturated to inundated
by standing water up to 6-inches in depth throughout most of the brawing seasan.
