�� � � � � . <br />� s g�^� ll ll���� i <br />Position Profrle — Police Sergeant <br />Date: Novem6er 1999 <br />Position Title: Policc Sergeant <br />Department: Police <br />Accountable to: Lieutenant <br />1'rima Ob'ectivc of Position <br />To directly supervise the activiCies of police officers and others in the areas of patrol, crime prevention, criminal <br />apprehension, training, planning, records, reports, identification, traffic, traffic accident investigation/prevention, <br />pubiic educaiion, public relations, criminal/non-criminal invesl;igal.ions (hoth juvenile and adult). <br />Major Areas of Accountahilitv <br />"1. Supervises or personally handles arrest situations and procedures, emergency services, traffic law <br />enforcement, legal and judicial activities. Assumes responsibility and accountability for all Che action or <br />inaction of persons and events with area of responsibility. <br />*2. Directs and sapervises police officers and others by assigning and/or transferring specific duties and <br />work schedules in order to meet the needs of the department and the community. Monitors and <br />approves time cards, aitendance, overlime, vacations, holidays, sick leave, leaves of absence, etc. <br />3. Rewards employees for excellent performance through cammendations and desirable work assignments. <br />Disciplines cmployees whose perFormance/acCions are inconsisient weth sound law enforcemenC <br />practices or Department policics, rules, regulations, and procedurea, using oral or written reprimands, <br />suspensions, and recommendations for discharge. <br />4. Hears first level grievances and attempts to resolve problems, where possible, in accordance wiih <br />department and CiLy policy and sound law enforcement practices. <br />"5. Plans and evaluates programs and personnel, and recomrnends performance standards and programs. <br />Remains knowledgeable of the functions and responsibiliiies of subordinates in order to advise, assist, <br />and instruct. Supervises, recommends, prepares, and conducCs appropriate training for subordinates. <br />"5. Conducts inspections to assure assignments are cazried out in accordance with departmental standards: <br />A. Peraonnel and equipment are clean, neat, and in the besl, possible condition to perform their <br />functions. <br />B. Reports are clear and concise. <br />C. Complaints of any nature are followed up thorough]y and efflciently. <br />D. Members of ihe public are dea1L wiEh fairly and impartially. <br />Conducts and oversees interviews of witnesses and suspects, and assures afl persons are treated fairIy, <br />impartially, and in compliance with the United 5tates consiitutional protections. <br />
