January 16, 2013
Item 6
Program Planning Report
and Attachments
, -
_— . _
COMMITTEE HUMAN RIGHTS
PROGRAM P.B.NNING COMMISSION
REPORT
COMMITTEE MEETING
PREPARED ON
, O F
.IANUARY 4, !
JANUARY 'I G,
2013 2013
Meeting: January 3, 2013
I. Grant Application Submitted to Meadowlark Institute for community dialogue on
interpersonal violence prevention: Civic Engagement Taskforce member Meagan Dushin has
worked with Chair Grefenberg to apply for a grant to fund a community dialogue over the course
of two half days. The proposal is to invite a group of representatives from our community
(including the School District, the Police Department, residents, etc.) to converse on their ideas
for violence prevention in the community. The group would then be invited to collaborate in
designing plans for action based on this dialogue. The grant application requested a professional
facilitator to lead the discussion in this community dialogue. (See Attachment for grant
materials)
II. Point of Information: Researching "Green Dot, Etc.": As their website claims, "Green Dot,
etc. provides training courses for both leadership and front-line professionals that focus on care
competency areas necessary for successful implementation of any program, such as: strategic
planning, bystander mobilization, persuasive communication, coalition building, etc"
(http: //www.livethegreendot. com/)
a. This program may be a resource for the community dialogue to consider, or for the HRC
to independently consider.
III. Program Planning Focus for the Year: The Program Planning Committee will focus its
planning for the year on three issues, though we anticipate "supporting" (though not sponsaring)
a fourth issue and certainly promoting other human rights programming in the community that is
called to our attention:
a. Violence Prevention — Sponsoring Programs/Events
b. Mental Illness Stigmatization — Sponsoring Programs/Events
c. Cultural Diversity — Sponsoring Program/Events
d. Gay Rights — Supporting Programming (sponsored by others)
e. Other human rights programs may be "promoted," over the course of the year, as called
to our attention.
• In planning programs and events, the mode of operation will be to include others in the planning
of events that directly impact them or their interests.
Program Planning Committee Report of January 16, 2013
