The goals of the
events are to bring the Roseville community together to a) examine the complex factors that contribute
to violence, and b) identify what we, as individuals and as a community, can do to help prevent violence.
As a topical framework, we are using the Global Campaign for Violence Prevention's definition of
interpersonal violence: the intentional use of physical force or power, threatened or actual, against
anotherperson that either results in o has a high likelihood of resulting in injury, death, psychological
harm, inaldevelopment, o depivation.
Expected Outcomes
The expected outcomes of these two dialogues are as follows:
1. An article written on the InCommons website blog describing the event and its outcomes,
2. A summary report shared with the Human Rights Commission and Roseville City Council
3. A discussion of the implications and next steps at a future Human Rights Commission meeting and
possibly also with the City Council
4. A video, developed with the assistance of the North Suburban CTV, that is aired on the local government
channel and made available for loan through the Ramsey County Library and Roseville City Hall
5. A renewed community spirit among participants with interest in preventing violence in their own
homes, neighborhoods, schools, and broader communities
Budget and Use of Funds
We are requesting $3,500 to —
1. work with Art of Hosting facilitator Ariella Tilsen to help develop and plan, and to facilitate these two
community dialogues ($1,000);
2. hire an administrative consultant to coordinate the events ($500);
3. pay for printing, mailing, and promoting these events ($500);
4. rent film equipment and hire North Suburban CTV staff to edit a short film documenting the event
($1,000); and
5. serve light refreshments for dialogue participants ($500).
Roseville city staff and community volunteers, including commission members, will contribute a
significant amount of time coordinating the events, as well.
Linkage with InCommons' Mission
We expect the participatory emphasis of InCommons is in alignment with this topical conversation and
will lend an effective methodology to the process. We are hopeful that if we examine this topic together,
sharing stories and perspectives using the InCommons tools available to our facilitator, we can help turn
the challenges of interpersonal violence into opportunities for building healthier ommuptes.
Program Planning Committee Report of January 16, 2013 8
