Carol,/n Curti _
rom: Corey A. Yunke
Sent: Thursday, February 14, 2013 11:54 AM
To: Carolyn Curti
Subject: New American Forum
Caralyn,
I have li5ted some details and talking points for any interested commissions.
fVew American Forum
Saturday, May 11, 213 From 11am to 2pm (roughly, we may not exhaust the entire time).
Roseville Lutheran Church, Cafeteria. (Capacity of 200, KOM predicts roughly 1Z5, maybe 10-20 from City Staffj.
Catered unch, On-site childcare, Transportation to and from proided.
I see this forum as an opportunity to address several concerns that have risen frorr less-than-posi#ive experience5 with
Karen individuals and Karen familes with Patrol, Community Relations Coordinator, and other ci#y staff. The primary
message that RVPD would like to communicate is that we are here to help, to protect, and to serve ALL Roseille
residents/visitors to ensure the highest quality of life. There is an unfortunate mistrust in government, law
enforcement, and military through the lens of many Karen indiiduals and families. This is largely based on negative
experiences prior to life in Roseville/Minnesata. I don't expect this event to be an "end all;" but more of an opportunity
to grease the communication channels between the greater Karen community, KOM, Raseville Schools, Public Safety,
and City Hall.
A significant portion of the event will be a Question and Answer panel to solicit input and concerns directly from Karen
residents. The only "pre-canned" topics may include: the potential dangers of NOT using the Rice/Larpenteur crosswalks
(based on a car/pedestrian accident in the past and observances of car/pedestrian near misses on Larpenteur, just west
of Rice); family violence and child discipline (educate the parameters of child discipline and domestic violence); reporting
suspicious behavior, what to do when pulled over, programs at RVPD, reporting unsafe/unsanitary living conditions,
basic fire safety, and opportunities far ciic engagement; Park Patrol, Neighborhood Watch, City Hall, etc.
I would welcome a representative of the Civic Engagement Task force to speak about the importance of civic
engagement and opportunities to get involved with City Hall.
This was the message from one of St. Paul's elected officials during the Karen New Year Celebration. I felt that it was
well received and relevant.
The sheli of this eent is complete; but the programming has yet to be finalized. I welcome outsicfe input while
recognizing that this event is only 3 hours long and human attention spans are limited.
Kind regards,
Corey
