March 20, 2013
Item 7. a
Evaluation of 2012 Achievements
Attachment #4
Excerpt from Mayor Dan Roe's State of the City Address
February 25, 2013
...We Aspire to be Engaged in Our Community's Success
Certainly, the "New American Forums," Nextdoor.com, the Park Renewal Program
implementation process, and other efforts previously mentioned, have been efforts
toward being welcoming and safe, but also they have been efforts toward engaging our
residents and businesses in our community — and specifically our City government
decision-making.
As was mentioned last year, a key effort that grew out of our Imagine Roseville 2025
community visioning process in 2006 was the Human Rights Commission's Community
and Neighborhood Engagement Task Force. The recommendations of that task force
were presented to the city council near the end of 2012, and it is expected that those
recommendations will be considered for implementation in 2013.
Facilitating connection of our residents and businesses to, and their participation in,
their local government decision-making, remains a key priority of the city council.
It is important when talking about civic engagement to acknowledge the great deal of
public involvement in our local government that goes on already. From the hundreds of
park & recreation volunteers to the dozens of individuals who serve on advisory
commissions to the hundreds of people continue to attend information meetings about
developments or park & recreation renewal efforts, to the folks who attend city council
hearings and send emails and make phone calls to council members, to the local
businesses who generously sponsor community events and activities year after year,
our community can be proud of our engaged citizenry.
One of our key goals in this area is to enhance and build on that existing involvement,
and especially to find ways to connect those who have not been connected, or may
experience language or cultural impediments to becoming involved....
HRC Current Status Review of 2012 Strategic Plan and 2013-2014 Revisions & Initiatives 15
