Date: 04/22/13 <br />Item: 5.a <br />Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month <br />May 2013 <br />Whereas <br />: The month of May commemorates the first Japanese immigrants to the United <br />States on May 7, 1843, and the transcontinental railroad completion on May 10, 1869 (Golden <br />Spike Day); and <br />Whereas <br />: In 1978, President Jimmy Carter signed a Joint Resolution designating the first <br />week of May as Asian Pacific Heritage Week, and in 1990, President George Bush signed a <br />Resolution expanding the holiday to the entire month of May; and <br />Whereas <br />: From the early 1800s to today, Asian and Pacific peoples have made lasting <br />contributions to and have played a vital role in the development of the United States; and <br />Whereas <br />: Roseville recognizes the rich cultural heritage representing many languages, <br />ethnicities and religious traditions that Asian Pacific Americans bring to our society; and <br />WhereasI <br />: Roseville recognizes Asian Pacific American Heritage Month’s 2013 theme of “ <br />Want the Wide American Earth <br />,”chosen to highlight a poem by acclaimed Filipino American <br />writer Carlos Bulosan; and <br />Whereas <br />: Roseville celebrates the contributions of millions that Asian American Pacific <br />Islanders have made to the American story and reminds us of the challenges they face as they <br />continue to embrace the American dream; and <br />Whereas <br />: By recognizing the accomplishments and contributions of Asian Pacific <br />Americans, Roseville celebrates the inclusion of all people in building a better future for our <br />citizens. <br />Now, Therefore Be It Resolved <br /> that the City Council hereby declare May 2013 to be Asian <br />Pacific American Heritage Month in the City of Roseville, County of Ramsey, State of <br />Minnesota, U.S.A. <br />In Witness Whereof <br />, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the City of Roseville <br />to be affixed this twenty-second day of April 2013. <br />________________________ <br />Mayor Daniel J.
