I attended the
meeting of the Roseville Planning Commission when the pawn shop permit was
discussed. There were numerous neighbors from Haddington Rd, Laurie St and
the Rosewood Village Condos present at the meeting. Several people,
including myself, spoke against approving the permit. Not one of the
neighbors spoke up in favor of the pawn shop yet in the end of the meeting
only one planning commission member had the courage to vote against
recommending approval.
Our little neighborhood is one that Roseville should be proud of. Neighbors
are actually connected and know each other. We look out for each other.
While our homes are not big, expensive or extravagant, we take pride in our
homes, yards and gardens. We are commited and invested in the long term well
being of Roseville in general and our neighborhood in particular. We want
not just our little community but all of Roseville, to be one where young
families will want to move in and raise their families, keeping Roseville
alive and well. Yet in spite of this, we are being asked to accept both a
liquor store and a pawn shop in our back yards against our will. Neither
type of business contributes to the well being of any community. If people
really need to sell an item, there are consignment stores they can go to or
they can travel across town to an already existing pawn shop. There are
plenty of tasks for Roseville Police to do without adding the daily checking
of the pawn shop reports. Liquor stores and Pawn shops are not the type of
businesses that advertise a vibrant community. Rather, it signals to the
general public that this in an area that is going down hill and is willing
to accept any business that applies for a permit.
I hope that the city council will carefully consider what is in the best
long term interest for the city of Roseville, demonstrating courageous
leadership. I respectfully ask you to remember that none of the residents
spoke in favor of approving the pawn shop permit.
Sincerely,
Ruth Batchelder
38
L.. ..
