Human Rights Commission Minutes
May 15, 2013 —Minutes
Commission meeting and raised the idea of the League including a poster in their annual student
essay contest. At that meeting he was told that the Minnesota Department of Human Rights
sponsored just such a contest.
Commissioner poneen asked if the League would allow for essays or posters for future contests.
Chair Grefenberg responded that the League members did not consider this at the meeting he
attended, as they were under the mistaken impression this would not be allowed at this time as
the League had the understanding the Minnesota Department of Human Rights ran their own
poster contest.
Commissioner Groff expressed concern with how a poster contest would be judged.
Commissioner poneen responded that this would be difficult and perhaps a poster contest should
remam separate.
Commissioner Becker questioned if a separate poster contest could be sponsored by the
Roseville HRC. Commissioner poneen indicated this could be an option.
Preliminary report on Apri130 Community Dialogues on Creating a Safe and Connected
Community: Chair Grefenberg stated the two dialogues on Creating a Safe and Connected
Community were held. He noted the turnout was poor with only 14 people in attendance at the
second dialogue. However, he was pleased with the discussion and the fact that 12 of the 14
people in attendance volunteered to work on implementing their recommendations with the
Roseville HRC.
Chair Grefenberg further reviewed the information that was gathered from the dialogues and
how those in attendance had divided up into four groups focused on the following objectives:
Communication with Action, Intergenerational Dialogues, Cultural Festivals, and
Neighborhoods.
Youth Commissioner Dao noted the concept of holding cultural festivals as discussed centered
around various ethnic foods and would provide an outreach opportunity for the community. She
did not anticipate the event could be planned for this summer, but anticipated it to be a great
event for 2014.
Chair Grefenberg reviewed the notes from the Communications group at the community
dialogue. He emphasized that this group was in favor of focusing outreach out to thought leaders
rather than general. He recommended the HRC consider this in the future.
Youth Commissioner Siliciano indicated another interesting discussion was having the block
captains meet on a yearly basis to increase community safety.
Vicky Jacobson discussed the conversation held at the last community dialogue regarding
intergenerational concerns. She explained she has been a resident of Roseville since 1957. Her
hope was to see the community work to create additional intergenerational opportunities.
