Description of the Corridor Development Initiati <br /> <br />Corridor Development Initiative <br /> <br />Overview <br /> <br />The Corridor Development Initiative (CDI), coordinated by the Twin Cities Local <br />Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC), is a proactive planning process to assist the planning <br />and development of mixed-use projects, including mixed income, higher density housing along major <br />corridors, with access to transportation options, retail amenities, parks, and job opportunities. CDI <br />fosters an exciting partnership among neighborhoods, city government, and a technical team of <br />development consultants, design experts, and facilitators to connect market opportunities with <br />neighborhood and city goals and raises the level of dialogue around redevelopment issues. In 2007 <br />the Corridor Development Initiative received the American Planning AssociationÔs National <br />Planning Excellence Award for a Grassroots Initiative. <br /> <br />ÑThe Initiative shows the importance of getting residents meaningfully engaged in shaping the <br />future of their neighborhoods,Ò said APA Awards Jury Chair Carol <br />community looking for a new way to resolve controversial neighborhood redevelopment and <br />infill issues should consider using this as a model,Ò she said. <br />The heart of the program involves an interactive block exercise <br />design and development experts from the InitiativeÔs technical team. Through this hands-on <br />educational workshop residents, neighborhood leaders, and other icipants develop their <br />own housing or mixed-use development proposals and test them to <br />financially viable. As a result, participants learn about cost factors and other considerations <br />developers must address when putting together a proposal. <br /> <br />ÑThe Corridor Development Initiative pulls citizens out of the r <br />community development decisions, and into a proactive role where <br />directing development for their community,Ò said Gretchen Nichol <br />Cities LISC and Corridor Development Initiative Coordinator.
