8. Additional Required Information:
A. Why variance is needed?
Hardship due to "Extreme Topography"
Our garage is currently a tuck-under garage attached to the house. The
house/garage is positioned on a very steep hill. The driveway leading to the
garage is very steep. The driveway is 63 feet long yet it is on a 8 foot 6 inches
elevation from the front of the garage to the other end that meets the public
road (McCarrons Blvd. South). In other words, the end of the driveway that
leads to the garage door is 8'6" higher than the public street level. This has
been creating hazardous and dangerous conditions for us any time we're
backing out of the driveway to enter the public street in front of the house.
Very often while backing our car, we had to apply brakes very hard to stop the
car from sliding too quickly into the public road in order to prevent us from
hitting other vehicles in trafiics.
It has been especially more dangerous during winter time when there was ice
or snow on the driveway. Our all-wheel-drive used to lose traction from the
steep driveway. Over the last six winters we struggled through these
dangerous conditions. There were numbers of incidences our car kept sliding
down and ended up in the middle or even on the other side of the public road!
Luckily there were no other vehicles on the road at those times. Otherwise, car
accidents could have happened for sure.
The new garage we intend to construct will be on the same elevation (or
slightly higher) of the street to eliminate the existing steepness and dangerous
conditions so we can safely drive our cars on it. This would also eliminate the
risks for car accidents form happening to both the public and us especially
when we have our four years old daughter in our car.
lta,r. 1i.au Ve m<.c.
