July 17, 2013
Item 6.a
Chair's Report
One of the strategies of the Roseville Human Rights Commission (HRC) this year is to make a concerted effort to reach
out to other community groups and organizations in an effort to cosponsor and/or support events or programs
regarding our two purposes: human and civil rights for Roseville residents and their engagement in civic governance.
Since I do not believe local Republicans are opposed to human rights and civic engagement I wanted to ask for your
assistance in the following way.
Are you aware of any events or programs open to the public which the local Republican organizations in Roseville
(Senate Districts 42 and 66) are planning, and which may be compatible with our mission. I would also appreciate it if
you could refer me to a contact person within one or both of these organizations. My intent is to ascertain if there
would be some common ground or interest in cosponsoring or collaborating on an event or program around civil rights
and civic engagement.
Recently the local DFL Senate District 66 approached me to see if the HRC would be interested in collaborating with
them on an event on Immigration Reform. In exploring this issue I realized that the Commission should be open to both
of the two major local political parties in Roseville. I do not want to automatically assume that local Republicans would
not be interested in some mutual programming with the Human Rights Commission over the next year or so on issues
with which we share some common ground.
Please give me a call at your convenience so we can discuss this and I can answer any questions you may have.
Gary Grefenberg, Chair
Human Rights Commission
Boguszewski E-Mail Response ofJuly 10, 2013:
Gary,
I will certainly pass this along to the local Republican leadership, and suggest to them that your idea should be
explored. I agree whole-heartedly -- one would hope that Human Rights-centered ideas and causes cross party
lines. Also, interestingly, keep in mind the so-called "tea party" movement within conservative circles is all
ABOUT civic engagement! Anyway, I'll give you a call if I get a moment, and I'll let you know any response I
get from the various local BPOU Chair and leadership. Thanks for the idea!
