July 17, 2013
Item 7.a
Final Report on Community Dialogues
1. The first dialogue on April 30th was attended by over 45 community members and used the
World Cafe methodology with groups of 3-5 people sitting at each round table. Facilitators
gathered participants' thoughts on the following questions:
a. When have you felt safe and/or connected in community? (This question was asked
twice so participants had the opportunity to dig deep and connect ideas with two
separate groups.)
b. How might we foster a more safe and connected community in Roseville, both as
individuals and as a collective?
Participants' comments were harvested, documented, organized into themes, and shared at
the second dialogue.
2. The second dialogue on May 14th was attended by 16 community members and used the
Open Space Technology methodology with volunteers from the group leading discussions on
a topic of interest (participants had the comments from the first dialogue and could also
suggest a new topic). Facilitators set the stage for discussions, helped participants form
groups, and assisted with the report outs. The following groups were formed:
a. Strengthening Neighborhoods and the Block Captain Program - ideas for how to
strengthen the neighborhood block captain program and for strengthening more
informal gatherings within neighborhoods.
b. Communication with Action - ideas for volunteerism, civic engagement,
neighborhood engagement, intergenerational engagement, and inviting/welcoming
other cultures.
c. Intergenerational Dialogue - noted the range of ages of Roseville residents from the
initial builders of Rose Township to the present shift of population demographics and
asked if elders were being represented in dialogues such as these. Suggested an
intergenerational dialogue.
d. "Culture Fest" - how to bring greater cultural awareness to Roseville through
community events.
Next Steps and Follow-Up
As a result of these two dialogues, the following actions were (or will be) taken:
1. Comments from both dialogues were "harvested" and documented.
2. Some of the Dialogue #2 participants offered to assist the Police Community Relations
Coordinator with surveying block captains to determine which captains are still active, and
phone calls were made to all block captains to update the database.
3. Other participants also recommended various follow-up efforts. (See copy of Summary of
Small Group Issues & Recommendations attached)
4. The HRC chair shared recommendations for next steps to the HRC for consideration.
5. Members of the planning committee will write a blog post reporting on the dialogues to the
Bush Foundation's blog.
6. The HRC chair will email dialogue participants providing the "harvest" documentation and
information on ways they can continue to participate.
Prepared by Volunteer Member of the HRC Planning Committee:
Summary of Small Groups Items%Issues pg. 2
