Metro Congregations with Community Gardens <br />www. ardenin matters.or www.afors.or <br />� Lutheran Church of the Reformation - SLP 952-929-0439 <br />httn://reformationslp� index ph�pa e=neighborhood <br />- ,�.: � Birchwood Communitv Gardens LCR provides Community Gardens <br />for our neighbors - Started in 1997 with 24 raised bed plots, the Birchwood <br />Community Gardens give SLP fanulies and individuals an opportunity to <br />grow &esh produce for themselves and others. <br />�� ��� The garden also features six additional plots for perennial flowers, <br />� s, .s tF�� �,,n � li � , <br />_ climbing roses on pathway arches and an accompanying fire pit for <br />��� neighborhood gatherings. Two ofthe garden plots are used to grow <br />;, roduce for the St. L <br />,-.,� � p ouis Park Emer en <br />g cy Program (STEP) and is <br />' tended to by the Garden Coordinator. <br />Youth Gardenin� Proeram The Birchwood Community Gaxdens' Youth Gardening Program joins volunteer <br />mentors with sma11 groups of kids to help plant, care for, harvest and cook various vegetables. The program aims to <br />foster a connection to the earth and our community, build self-esteem and teambuilding skills, and be lots of fun! <br />This program is open to anyone in the community. (Please have an adult accompany children under 5.) We will <br />meet Saturday mornings begrinning in April, rain or shine (indoors if raining). Fee is $15 for the season, but no one <br />will be turned away due to an inability to pay. I left Uganda in 2005 without <br />having any idea how and when I would leave my country. I mean it was a ha.rd decision to reach. I am here to <br />rebuild my life and live in safety and peace. Getting to know me well and knowing the community well, in late <br />July, 2008, I started a Community Garden from which the community was able to get some healthy egg plants, <br />tomatoes, squash, green bea.ns, reddish, peas, cilantro. We are planning, preparing and hoping to have a better <br />Community garden that will involve people of all ages around. All produce is donated to area food shelves and social service <br />agencies for distribution to needy families.
